Among the UST classmates, the proportion of foreign students is significant.

It accounts for about 30% of all students enrolled. Did you know the fact that there is an international student association representing them? Let me introduce the president of the UST International Student Association - Mr. Iqram Hussain.

UST International Student Association(UST-ISA)

Iqram Hussain (President of UST-ISA)

Please introduce yourself and tell us your current affiliation and about your ongoing research.

I am currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Medical Physics at the University of Science and Technology (UST) in Republic of Korea. I am a research associate in the Center for Medical Convergence Metrology at the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science in Daejeon, Republic of Korea. I am also working on the Knowledgebase Super Brain project in the Electronics and Telecommunication Research Institute, which is also in Daejeon. I received a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the Khulna University of Engineering & Technology in Bangladesh. I started my career at electricity generation plants operated by Summit Power International, Ltd. and Doreen Power Generations, Ltd. in Dhaka, Bangladesh. I have experience in power plant operation, maintenance, and project management. My current research interests include wearable sleep monitoring devices, big-data analytics, neuroscience, medical physics, brain-computer interactions, and ergonomics. I am working on a sleep monitoring system to support AI-based disease prediction. My research has been published and is under review for publication by several journals, such as IEEE Access and Sensors.

What made you become the President of the UST-ISA?

The UST International Students Association (UST-ISA) is a group of volunteers who each represent UST students from their respective countries. The UST-ISA President is generally elected from among these representatives. I am a representative and had served as the UST-ISA Vice-President, which is why I think I was elected.

Is there a reason why you chose Republic of Korea and UST as destinations for studying abroad?

Republic of Korea is one of the most technologically innovative countries, so the educational and research opportunities are incredible here. Beyond that, it offers good welfare benefits, including a comprehensive healthcare system. All of these reasons motivated me to choose Republic of Korea as my destination for graduate education. UST is a research institute-based university and most of the institutes conduct blended academic and applied research. This industry-academia collaboration motivated me to choose UST in particular.

UST students participate in many industrial research projects that show them how academic research is implemented in the real world. These kinds of projects make it easier for them to get jobs after graduating.

What has been the most memorable part of your UST life?

The UST Odyssey program has been one of the most memorable events so far. It was really charming to be introduced to incoming students from different parts of the world and diverse cultures.

On the contrary, what are the difficulties?

The language barrier was the issue I was most worried about before I got here. I worried a lot at first, but now I'm fine. I don't think there's much difficulty because good friends, colleagues, and professors treat me warmly and help me a lot.

How can UST contribute to successful UST-ISA management?

International students want to feel that they are an essential part of decision- and policymaking at UST. In general, UST officials collaborate with UST-ISA in doing things like organizing events for international students. However, due to the COVID-19 crisis, these kinds of events and gatherings have been limited. We’re hoping that UST and UST-ISA will be able to collaborate more after COVID-19 passes.

How would you like to introduce UST to prospective international UST students?

UST students don’t need to worry about research funding. Most of the labs are well equipped and available to students to utilize. In addition, because the school is made up of research institutes, students can get experiences collaborating with professional researchers.

Can you be more specific about future UST-ISA plans after COVID passes?

UST-ISA missed organizing UST-ISA meetings, field trips, game and movie nights, international food festivals, and so on due to the COVID-19 outbreak. We hope that we’ll be able to bring back all of these events after the world heals a little from COVID.

Can you tell us a little about your plans or goals going forward?

After I graduate, I want to conduct wearable sleep device and health informatics research to be able to leverage my passion and make an impact. I also plan to return to my home country to better serve my people with the skills I have acquired here.
