    Agency for Defense Development

    Introduction

    Agency for Defense Development was established in August 1970 under the banner of the self-reliable defense. ADD is the one and only national agency for R&D in defense techonology contributing to enforcing the national defense, to improving the national R&D capacity. and to fostering the domestic industry .It seemed impossible to manufacture even the basic weapons when it was established, but we succeeded in domestic development of the most advanced weapon systems and reached to the 10th world-level in the defense technology. However. it has been required for ADD to itself to adjust the rapidly changing security and R&D environment, and innovation is the key to the occasion of this turning point period. ADD should be transformed to the customer preferred agency through developing core weapon systems and highly advanced technologies. So as to do this, it is necessary for us to understand what the people and the military require. It should be also transformed to the cleaner. fairer and more open agency to cooperate with the R&D partners--industries.academia, institutes and the military.     Institut Pasteur Korea

    Introduction

    Institut Pasteur Korea is a not-for-profit private organization based in the Pangyo Technovalley in Gyeonggi Province. It was established in 2004 through an agreement between the Institut Pasteur and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) with financial support from the Korean Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and from Gyeonggi Province. The strategic focus of the institute is in the area of infectious disease research, considering such ailments as Tuberculosis (TB), Hepatitis B & C (HBV, HCV), Influenza and Leishimaniasis. The institure utilizes its proprietary technology platforms built on a unique integration of IT, BT, and chemistry to identify novel molecular targets and discover small molecules. Especially, Institut Pasteur Korea leverages Korea’s IT infrastructure to develop innovative imaging technologies for high throughput drug screening.     The Institute for Basic Science (IBS) was established on November 21, 2011 with the vision of "Making Discoveries for Humanity & Society". In order to achieve this vision, we select and operate our Centers based on the following four guiding principles: scientific excellence of researchers, openness through research collaboration, creativity of research themes and autonomy in research.
    Our most important task is to provide our researchers with a stable environment that allows them to immerse themselves in creative research in order to expand the frontiers of scientific knowledge, which will greatly impact the development of our society. Since our guiding principles place the highest value on basic science research motivated purely by intellectual curiosity, researchers can focus fully on their research without being pressured to produce practical outcomes. In particular, we are developing experimental models for mid- to long-term, group research, as well as interdisciplinary research by securing research infrastructures and outstanding talent. With these endeavors, rather than producing predictable outcomes based on pre-determined plans, we will be able to build a world that was once only imagined.     Korea Aerospace Research Institute

    Introduction

    Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) is a specialized institution founded for national development through the research and development of aerospace scientific technologies. Despite its relatively short history, it has developed the world’s leading aerospace scientific technologies, contributing to the development of the national economy and the improvement of the citizens’ quality of life through its commitment to research and development.
    In the aviation field, we have developed core parts for civilian and military application to develop Korean models of helicopters and the world's first tiltrotor UAV that is capable of vertical takeoff and landing and high-speed flight. In the satellite field, we have developed Arirang, the world’s leading high-resolution earth observing satellite and Cheollian for meteorological and marine observation. In the space launch vehicle field, we have constructed the Naro Space Center and succeeded in launching Naro which was Korea’s first space launch vehicle.
    It is time, however, to secure core technologies to enhance the national competitiveness and future growth engine in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. KARI intends to continue its efforts to secure the future core technologies based on its growth until now. We plan to focus on the development of eco-friendly and high-efficiency advanced aircraft and core aviation technologies; the development of advanced satellite and commercialization of satellite technologies, securing the satellite launching and space transportation capability; and the development of location information system, securing lunar exploration and space exploration technology.
    Furthermore, we will continue to rise to the challenge to make the aerospace industry the next generation growth engine and contribute to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

    Korea Astronomy & Space Science Institute

    Introduction

    Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) is the national astronomy research institute of Korea established in 1974. KASI opened the history of modern Korean astronomy via the establishment of the Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory, expanded the observational wavelength range to radio via the establishment of the Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory, and made a stepping stone to jump into the future of astronomy via the establishment of the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory.     Introduction

    KIRAMS the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences, is the nation's leading cancer center, founded in 1963 as the Radiation Medicine Research Center. In 1973, we were renamed the Korea Cancer Center Hospital then in 2002, a new medical complex composed of a hospital, a research center, and the National Radiation Emergency Medical Center ware established. we have been the nation's most productive cancer center in terms of developing cancer diagnosis and treatment technologies. Since 1988, according to national cancer database statistics, we have grown to become the nation's largest cancer center serving 5 - 11% of the nation's cancer patients. We have the latest and most comprehensive treatment services and facilities such as PET/CT., the CyberKnife Center, and the Cancer Prevention Center.     Korea Polar Research Institute

    Introduction

    Korea’s polar research history began in 1987 with the Polar Research Center of the Ocean Research Institute which was set up as part of the Antarctic station Constr uction program. Since that time, it expanded from a mere Polar Research Laborator y to Polar Research Institute, a subsidiary research unit of the Korea Ocean Resea rch Institute. the Korea Polar Research Institute is now a real international polar re search institute operating the King Sejong Station in Antarctic and Dasan Station in the Arctic. It is actively participating in several relevant international organizations including the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Parties (ATCP), the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research and the International Arctic Science Committee(IASC),it has come to be recognized internationally by publishing its research achievements in prominent international journals. Antarctica is the sole part of the earth that can be used to secure national interes ts through scientific research, while tje Arctic is special in light of the fact that the region will require joint development through joint research with neighboring countries. In the 21st century, scientific research related to the global climate is expected to attract significant attention, and the polar regions will play critical roles in research on the global climate . Expansion of research activities on a continuous basis in these last undeveloped and non-polluted regions of the earth will be the only way to secure the national interest for the country. In order to enhance research activities in polar regions, among other things it is necessary that sufficient infrastructures to support such activities be built up. Inorder to build up such infrastructure for polar research, we have many tasks to complete such as the construction of a research ice breaker, the building of a second station in Antarctic and the reconstruction of Dasan station in the Arctic. The Korea Polar Research Institute, a subsidiary research unit of Korea Ocean Research Institute, will by building up the infrastructure and increasing the globalization of research activities make its utmos t effort to serve the public interests by becoming the only polar research institute in Korea.

    National Fusion Research Institute

    Energy is a fundamental provider of the convenience and comfort we enjoy in our daily lives, and at the same time it serves as a very basic stepping-stone that can promise the sustainable growth of our future society. As one of the world's top five crude oil importing countries, Korea has a precarious economic structure depending heavily on imported energy. The current generation, therefore, has a sacred responsibility and duty to develop the technologies essential for clean and reliable future energy sources for the next generation to inherit. NFRI is a unique national laboratory dedicated to conducting research on and engaging in the development of fusion energy, which has been attracting worldwide attention as an inexhaustible source of future energy. Employing our domestic technology, NFRI has constructed the world's highest-ranking fusion research device called KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) and established an initial performance milestone by successfully generating the first plasma, thereby bringing the dream of fusion energy commercialization a step closer to reality.     Introduction

    The world economy in the 21st century is accelerating its shift to a knowledge-based economy due to the remarkable growth of science and technology. Knowledge resource, including technology, are the key factor determining national competitiveness, therefore each nation should create knowledge-based future growth engines through the rapid development of basic research, so as to swiftly toward an advanced economy. Mathematics, which is the basis of all scientific disciplines, will contribute to the development of science and technology in our nation through the exchange of information and ideas in these areas, mathematics will play a key role in establishing the foundations of an advanced knowledge economy. In this environment, the National Institute for Mathematical Sciences (NIMS) will play a critical role by performing research on mathematical sciences, the basis of future technology, to transform our nation into a knowledge-based society. First, our research capability will be strengthened by introducing an open type research system to gather together the world's best-known domestic and overseas scholars in the mathematical sciences and entrust them with conducting mid- and long-term research in advanced areas of mathematics. Second, joint research with other researchers in other areas such as IT, BT, and finance will be conducted by introducing a central and combined research system to explore future areas of promise in technological fields based on mathematical sciences. Third, the establishment of a Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) for mathematical sciences will make it possible for other research institutes and industries to directly use the network and will lead to the delivery and popularization of the specialized knowledge in mathematical sciences that is needed by related disciplines and other areas. NIMS will make steady efforts to respond flexibly to global changes and requirements in order to emerge as a center for the mathematical sciences, it will become a World Class Institute (WCI) in the process.
